How To Put Iphone 5 In Discovery Mode

  1. Home
  2. Mobile
  3. iPhone & iPad

The phone is disabled.

I do not know the passcode.

I turn the phone off, hold the home button, plugged into itunes. it just goes to the normal start screen.

I turn the phone off holding power and home and hold home button, plugged into itunes... same deal. no recovery.

I tried with itunes open and with itunes closed.

Any other way to get it into recovery? I dont need the info on it, I have a back up to restore to.

Turn the phone off, then hold the bottom button until it prompts you to plug in the cable, don't plug in the cable before the icon comes up. I just did this yesterday and it worked like a charm.

I held the bottom button for 3 minutes and nothing happens.

By the way, the button works for everything else (that i can get to without the passcode)

iCrap is a PITA! I was trying to recover my daughter's iPad last week, got into recovery mode and it failed consistently because the lock button was toggled. Take it to a "Genius"

Have you tried another cable?

Technically you didn't suggest it....You suggested a different cable...not a different USB port. ;) Just teasing you

its not over... the user had their icloud id attached and you can't do anything to the phone.

Had to call apple and find the proof of purchase and email that to them.

Then it takes 2-3 days for them to release the phone from the icloud.

You idea of using a new cable didn't work, but gave you helpful post because it got me in the right direction.

But now i think Wy3208 is more helpful.

Even with the new cable the hold button factory reset didn't work? I hate apple right now.

holy crap, switching usb ports worked for me on my disabled iphone 6s that wouldn't go into recovery mode.  it's now there.  thanks for the info!

For the record, switching USB ports worked for me too. I'm kind of blown away that the USB port could have mattered, but it did. What a weird thing. I'm on a Lenovo X1 Carbon running Win 10 Pro.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Wow! Don't know how sheeple put up with this crap non-stop. I tried to restore a 6S from a former employee to give to a new employee and wore my fingers down to stumps holding down different keys for hours on end. Skeptical that changing USB ports would make a difference but it freaking worked!!!

Just to say for those who have issues putting their phones on recovery or DFU mode and this can happen with iphones
Download ReiBoot which is a tool that would do that for you then restore your phone via iTunes making sure your iTunes is up today , thus should get rid of activation error
Hope this would help
